While Facebook’s metaverse vision may include many younger users who eschew its social media platform wandering around in virtual worlds, many in Generation Z are reluctant to acquire a VR device, with half of those polled stating they were doubtful or uninterested in doing so.
The biannual Gen Z research project conducted by financial firm Piper Sandler (via Fast Company) polled 7,100 teenagers on various topics, including “the metaverse.” While 50% stated they had no plans to acquire VR gear to access the virtual world, 26% said they already had one, and 9% said they were interested in purchasing one.
Only 5% of the 26% of participants who own a VR device utilize it regularly, while 82 percent use it less than a few times each month. Although 68 percent of teenagers identify as gamers, this is the case.
Another section of the survey inquired about NFTs and the blockchain, which are expected to be critical components of the metaverse. Only 11% had traded in cryptocurrency, although 87 percent had heard of it. non-fungible tokens were mentioned by 61 percent of respondents, and 8 percent of those who had heard of them had purchased them.
Morning Consult found that 56 percent of millennials (those born between 1980 and 1996) and 51 percent of Gen Z (those born between 1997 and 2012) were interested in using the metaverse, but that the former group’s interest dropped to around 50 percent and the latter’s to less than half when it came to Meta’s Horizon Worlds and Horizon Workrooms.
