Despite all the buzz about the Samsung Galaxy S23’s possible camera improvements, the new display glass might be one of the significant upgrades.
Today Corning stated that the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, which is scheduled to be unveiled on February 1 at Unpacked, will include the company’s new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 technology. Victus+ technology is presently available in the Galaxy S22 series.
While Gorilla Glass has played a significant role in the recent improvement in display glass toughness, the second-generation Victus technology seeks to address concrete as your phone’s weak point finally. Compared to competing items, the technology’s testing demonstrated significantly greater resilience against drops on surfaces simulating concrete or asphalt.
At the end of November 2022, Corning announced that “Gorilla Glass Victus 2 survived drops of up to one meter on a surface imitating concrete.”
Competitive aluminosilicate glasses made by other manufacturers frequently break when thrown from a height of less than half a metre. Additionally, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 retained scratch resistance up to four times better than competing aluminosilicate and continued to withstand drops up to two metres onto an asphalt-like surface.
The growth in the typical size and weight of smartphones over the past few years presented a problem for Corning. According to the manufacturer, screen sizes have increased by 10%, and phones are 15% heavier now than they were just four years ago. Just that alone raises the danger that dropping it will hurt the display. Victus 2’s innovations, however, have primarily rendered that unnecessary.
