According to a Microsoft poll, Game Pass may get a new ad-supported tier

Although a survey isn’t much to go on, Microsoft has acknowledged attempting to extend Game Pass with new initiatives since it views the program as the foundation of its gaming platform. The survey’s proposed strategy would drastically undermine PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold.

According to a Spanish survey shared by a ResetEra user, Microsoft may look into a cheaper, ad-supported tier for Game Pass memberships. The suggested base package would cost €3 per month and feature online multiplayer gaming and access to the Game Pass library, making it one of the most affordable online multiplayer subscription options for consoles.

Xbox games with online multiplayer presently cost $15 per month with a Game Pass Ultimate subscription or $10 per month with an Xbox Live Gold membership. The least expensive PlayStation Plus package costs $10 per month.

A significant percentage of Xbox owners might sign up for the service if the minimum monthly fee for online multiplayer with a €3 Game Pass subscription (about $3 US) were reduced. Nintendo’s $20/year Switch subscription package is the only console multiplayer subscription that is less expensive.

Like current Game Pass plans, the rumored new tier would let users select between playing downloaded games on Xbox or PC. Users need to view advertising before launching a game, and the ad tier wouldn’t offer cloud gaming. Additionally, it would exclude EA Play and price breaks while delaying access to first-party Microsoft games for six months after their initial release.

In addition to competing with other online gaming services, a €3 subscription would be cheaper than other game catalog subscriptions. The least expensive services that include new-release titles are Apple Arcade ($5 per month) and EA Play ($5 per month).

Overall, Nintendo is even more accessible, although it only allows users to play retro games from the 1980s and 1990s. Additionally, none of the firms that offer gaming subscriptions have tried ad-supported levels, so it’s difficult to predict how users will react.

The family-sharing tier, which Microsoft began experimenting with in Colombia and Ireland in August, is contrasted with the ad-supported plan in the Microsoft poll. Up to five accounts may share access to Game Pass features under that subscription, which is now only available to Xbox Insiders. Although Microsoft hasn’t revealed the exact cost of the Family subscription or indicated if it would be available worldwide, the survey puts it at €22 per month.
