The display of Apple’s upcoming iPhone SE could be much bigger than the one on the model it replaces. Ross Young, an analyst with Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), recently updated his prediction for the fourth-generation iPhone SE, telling MacRumors that he thinks the device will come with a 6.1-inch screen with a notch.
Remember that the third-generation iPhone SE features a 4.7-inch Retina HD display?
Young did not state whether or not he thinks the TrueDepth camera array that will power Face ID will be located in the notch. To reduce expenses, it is conceivable that Apple will omit the feature and go with the tried-and-true Touch ID sensor.
With a larger screen, Apple would probably be forced to move the capacitive Touch ID Home button, which is generally found below the display on smartphones, to the side of the device, similar to how it is on the iPad mini and iPad Air.
Face ID won’t be housed there if Apple sticks with Touch ID, so that the front-facing notch might be relatively small. Without a bottom-mounted Touch ID Home button, an iPhone SE would probably look like an iPhone XR. The 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display on the handset was identical, but it had a more prominent notch to support Face ID.
Apple’s cheapest smartphone is the iPhone SE. Price ranges for the current-generation model range from $429 for 64GB of internal storage to $579 for 256GB. It’s anticipated that the fourth-generation iPhone SE will go on sale in 2024. Since Apple increased the price of the third-generation iPhone SE by $30 when it was released earlier this year, a price increase might be necessary.
In other iPhone news, Apple expert Mark Gurman predicts that the models released the following year would be the first to replace the Lightning port with USB-C. Gurman believes a wireless iPhone will be available in the not-too-distant future. Thus the new connector is unlikely to last as long as the 30-pin and Lightning connectors did.
