High-end Android phones will soon have satellite feature similar to the iPhone 14 Pro due to Qualcomm

In 2023, Qualcomm will add an emergency satellite feature to Android smartphones. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC will support the new Satellite function. With the introduction of the iPhone 14 series, Apple added unique satellite emergency messaging.

In case there is no network, Qualcomm has revealed that its new CPUs and modems would have a function dubbed the Snapdragon Satellite feature to assist users in contacting relevant authorities in an emergency. The Iridium satellite network helps the chipmaker accomplish this. The business has stated that this feature will have different use cases. Compared to Apple’s Emergency SOS feature, this is more effective.

There have been tales of individuals being saved thanks to this capability since Apple introduced the iPhone 14 series with exclusive satellite emergency messages. Although the feature is quite helpful, non-iPhone users need help using it. But we were all aware that Android would get the capability eventually.

The good news is that Qualcomm is putting it into practice more effectively to give Android users a better experience and give Apple tough competition. According to the chip manufacturer, Android phone owners can send and receive messages even when there is no cell coverage. In addition to being helpful in emergencies, the feature will enable SMS texting and other messaging programs. The feature will be “recreation in remote, rural, and offshore locales,” according to Qualcomm.

There won’t be any free message exchanges available. There will probably be some service modifications. The chipmaker stated that the price of the satellite-based messaging service and related services “would be determined by OEMs and service providers and how they choose to provide the service.”

Devices with Qualcomm’s top-tier Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC under the hood will support the new Satellite feature. The initial purpose of the Snapdragon Satellite feature will be to connect you to aid in an emergency if you are in a remote place without mobile coverage. Qualcomm says “premium texting” won’t be available for a while and will cost extra. According to the information provided by the chipmaker, sending emergency texts may either be free or incur a small fee. It is important to note that Apple still needs to make this available and that their SOS feature only allows you to send SMS via satellite.

The manufacturer has also described the feature’s operation. Garmin Response is used by Snapdragon Satellite. According to Qualcomm, when you send an SOS, response coordinators immediately use the customer’s Latitude and Longitude in their specialized mapping and response coordination software to decide which agency should organize the rescue.
