The Nvidia Broadcast app attempts to mimic eye contact with the camera. Nvidia has updated its video conferencing software, making it the newest business to address the issue of maintaining eye contact during video conferences. This and other minor enhancements in the upgrade may aid content producers in creating more captivating presentations.

This week, Nvidia published Nvidia Broadcast 1.4, which has a few new beta capabilities to enhance video appearances, one of which seeks to address a long-standing issue with video conferencing.

The new Eye Contact function from the company calculates and modifies a video subject’s eyes’ directed gaze to make it appear as though they are staring directly into the camera. The result should make it easier for viewers to keep eye contact with the video’s speaker.

Nvidia is hardly the first business to attempt to imitate eye contact during video conferences or video chats. To combat the effect that happens when users glance at the screen rather than the camera during FaceTime chats, which paradoxically destroys eye contact between callers, Apple included FaceTime Attention Correction with iOS 13 in 2019. In 2020, Microsoft gave the Surface Pro X a feature that is compatible with numerous video calling programs, including Microsoft Teams and Skype.

Nvidia’s technology benefits presenters who might be reading from a script while recording or streaming, in contrast to Apple, whose eye contact correction was built around two-way discussions. It also aims to effortlessly switch between actual and synthetic eyes when the speaker purposefully maintains a distance from the listener.

However, because Nvidia hasn’t tested Eye Contact for all combinations of eye colours and lighting situations, it is still in beta. In order to improve the AI-based system, the company is asking customers to provide video clips as feedback.

The other major update to Nvidia Broadcast is a vignette effect that simulates bokeh depth of field to enhance virtual backgrounds. Nvidia has also improved how its AI manages other virtual backdrop effects like Blur, Replacement, and Removal by using temporal information. The addition should lessen the impact of visual faults in virtual backgrounds. Once more, user video feedback can aid in development.

Users can also capture screenshots of their webcams and mirror the camera immediately. Under the camera preview pane are the icons for such features.

Additionally, Nvidia added its new features as microservices to Maxine, the SDK that developers can use to incorporate Nvidia Broadcast technologies into other programs. Developers can now get early access to Live Portrait, another new functionality.
