WhatsApp to allow users to answer video calls with animated avatars

In order to make the use of WhatsApp easier and help the platform compete with its competitors such as Telegram, the company has been rolling out several latest features for the instant messaging platform.

Currently, a couple of reports suggest that the company is working on a recent feature that is going to make its users able to receive video calls with emoji-inspired avatars.

According to a recent report issued by WABetaInfo, the instant messaging platform is functioning on a feature that lets users show up as animated avatars in video calls. Moreover, these animated avatars are going to switch WhatsApp profile pictures as well as the feed from the smartphone’s front camera to the users on request.

The report further added that the company has been working on this fun feature for quite some time and it is still under development.

WABetaInfo further shared a screenshot that displays a recent button that notes ‘Switch to avatar’ that users are going to have to press in order to switch from the live front camera feed to their animated avatars. Beta users might see the button pop up during video calls, however, the button is still not working.

Apart from that, Animated avatars are going to be very handy to WhatsApp’s lacklustre video call experience, which doesn’t provide any filters or interesting features including say, Google Duo does.

Nevertheless, the company did not provide any information about what kind of animated avatars WhatsApp is going to implement in the future. These might be 2D or 3D.
